The Olive Telegraph

Quarter 4: November 2011

Hi $FIRSTNAME$
In the Grove, we chopped down 1/3 of the trees... Pruning Barnea 1Pruning Villa 2 grove

Warren is dwarfed by the high trees prior to 'pruning'!

Why did we make these drastic cuts?  Put simply: Productivity. Grove management inputs vs fruit out put.  These pictures show extreme renewal pruning, these trees had become too big so starting over with this section of the grove was the decision.  Rest assured these trees are not in our 'Adopt an olive tree' program!

On the upside the views from Villa 2 are now unlimited!  But not for long (we hope). These Barnea trees will bounce back to head high in 6 months, and produce fruit in three years.

If you have a tree at home now is the time to prune it, cut off any ragged branches and shape the tree to fit your space.  The tree will grow new shoots from where you cut it.

Did you know:  From planting New Zealand Olive trees produce olives in five years, in some hot mediterranean climates it can be 40 years before a tree will fruit.

Adopt an Olive tree and receive all the produce from it!

Adopt an Olive tree graphicHave you heard? We'd like to adopt out every olive tree in our Olivery grove.  Each adoptee gets a certificate and all the produce from that tree for a year.  Of course the adoption includes unlimited visits to your tree!

We are having a lot of fun with adoption, its turned into a real talking point for media and visitors to the OlivAdopt an Olive treeery.   Some people like to wander the grove and choose a tree, others are happy to adopt the 'next tree on the list'.  Of course its a little cheeky, we do not keep every trees fruit seperate, but we can guarantee your products would come from the block of 80 or so trees around your adopted tree.  Its the ultimate gift for Christmas!

You can find out more online.

Monteiths Wild Food Challenge (TV1 9.30pm Thursdays)

Crazy, fun, and talented chefs Mark Souton and Wylie Dean from the Monteith's Wild Food Challenge stopped in at the Olivery on their NZ tour.  They picked, graded, and ate olives then we spent some time trialing the best technique for 'Spitting the Pit' trying to set a new New Zealand record.  Its four minutes of fun half way through chapter 3 on this link.
