Olive Oil and your health Olive Oil in bowl

I am always interested as to the pleathora of good things you can do with your diet to maintain a healthy body.  It would seem quite right that you are what you eat, and variation in diet will impact positively or negatively on your body.

In 2011 I have been collecting references to published articles on extra virgin olive oil and its health attributes.  It looks to me that it is the antioxidents in olive oil that are behind these health claims.  The articles and links are below, you be the judge!

Kalamata grafts January 20112011 Harvest

I have just been around the groves in Hawke's Bay to do an end of summer check.  The trees are in the final phase of fruiting, and will mature over the next two months.  I was looking out for fruit quantity, size of fruit, signs of disease, and estimating total grove yield.  The colour of the fruit is not so important at present, currently all fruit is very green, I would expect it to begin to turn colour at the end of March.

Harvest usually begins in May.  A small luxury is afforded to olive growers, as this is the last summer fruit to be harvested we get a window into whether any other crops are running early or late due to seasonality factors.  Current indications are that we will be harvesting two weeks ahead of last year, so plans have begun!

Easy Tips

Oil stains in clothing can easily be removed using dishwash liquid. The degreasant in the liquid works on stains better than laundry liquid or powder.

Always warm olives before serving, this releases the flavours in the olive.

Dukkah

Duqqa (also spelled dukkah or dukka) is an Egyptian side dish consisting of a mixture of herbs, nuts,  and spices. It is typically used as a dip with bread or fresh vegetables, and eaten as an hors d'œuvre. Pre-made versions of duqqa can be bought in the spice markets of Cairo, and are sold in paper cones.

The word is derived from the Arabic for "to pound" since the mixture of spices and nuts are pounded together after being dry roasted to a texture that is neither powdered nor paste-like. The actual composition of the spice mix can vary from family to family, vendor to vendor though there are common ingredients.
